In 2015 a market research had show the need for a new training aircraft to replace the older Cessna and Piper. In 2016, the Sonaca group announced the creation of the subsidiary “Sonaca Aircraft” dedicated to the development, certification CS-VLA EASA and mass production of a new training aircraft based on TAF's Sling 2.
In April 2017, Sonaca Aircraft unveiled the Sonaca S200 in which 80% of the Sling 2 structure has been redesigned . The response from the specialist press was positive, and orders from schools in Belgium, France, Switzerland and Turkey soon followed. Mass production started in a dedicated workshop installed at Temploux airfield.
In 2018, after obtaining the Type Certification of the S200, Sonaca Aircraft announced the development of a Glass Cockpit variant, named the S201.
At the beginning of 2020, the Covid 19 pandemic prevented any presentation at airshows and air fair and, while orders were picking up again at the beginning of 2022, production was halted in May 2022, after 57 aircraft had been completed.
BAPA was contacted and we were offered an S201 fuselage that was used for training purposes.
When the factory closed, some missing parts were recovered (engine cowlings, engine mount, seats, nose gear) but we still have to find wings and tailplane if we want to exhibit a complete aircraft.
